To obtain a first-time Minnesota Class D driver's license as an adult, you must:
Pass the Written Knowledge Test to receive your Instruction Permit.
Hold your Instruction Permit for the required minimum time:
Age 18: Must hold the permit for 180 days (6 months).
Age 19 and Older: Must hold the permit for 90 days (3 months).
Pass the Road Skills Test (Road Test) at a state exam station.

YES, regardless of age, it is a requirement by the Secretary of State for a person to have passed the Written Exam and obtained their Instruction Permit before taking driving lessons.

The first step is always to get your Instruction Permit.
Study the MN Driver’s Manual and schedule an appointment at a state exam station to take the Written Knowledge Test.
Once you pass the test, you will be issued a Valid MN Instruction Permit.

Yes, generally, all new Minnesota residents must obtain a valid MN Instruction Permit before taking the Road Skills Test.
You can use your valid driver's license from another country or valid international driver’s license to take the Written Knowledge Test.
Once you pass the test, the state will issue your permit.

Although we do not guarantee that one will pass the State Road Test, we do our best to prepare you for first-time success. In fact, over 90% of our students pass the test the first attempt. (Please visit Sunrise Driving School's Google business page)

To be issued an MN driver's license (after passing your Road Test), you must present several original documents to the state exam station. You need to have already passed the Written Exam and completed the Instruction Permit holding period.
If you do not have a valid State ID, you must bring documents to prove:
Identity and Date of Birth
Examples: Original Social Security Card, U.S. or Foreign Passport, Certified Birth Certificate, Visa, or other approved identification. (MN DVS requires specific Primary and Secondary documents—check their official list).
Social Security Number (SSN)
You must provide your SSN on the application.
Proof of Minnesota Residency
Examples: Utility bill, bank statement, or property statement showing your current address.
Note: All document requirements and final license issuance are handled by the Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS), not by the driving school.
